What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN stands for the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy and is a series of national tests run by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The test is done by all students nationally in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests cover the basic skills in skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

What are the benefits of NAPLAN?
There are several benefits of NAPLAN. The tests assess how well a child is doing against national benchmarks at a point in time. The NAPLAN results allow parents and students to know how they are performing in comparison to their peers within their school, and across all schools in Australia. This means that parents can see how their child is performing, and also how their school is performing.

NAPLAN results are also excellent for identifying gaps in learning and can assist identifying areas of improvement for students. The detailed nature of NAPLAN reporting means that parents will be able to know exactly what areas need support. A further benefit is the exposure to testing in a low-stakes environment (i.e. there is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’).

Why is it important my child do their best in NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is the first exposure of your child to standardised tests in their schooling. The tests are quite basic and do not need to be stressful. The preparation for NAPLAN should reflect that these tests assess basic skills. Most students would like to do well on these tests and this is a good opportunity to help students understand how to prepare for and take tests.

Preparation for the tests can help your child to establish good study habits to perform well in school. Furthermore, by having a solid foundation of good results in NAPLAN, students can set themselves up for success in the later years of school by identifying areas they need to improve upon before these crucial years. The relationship between preparation and performance can be a significant lesson in the academic life of students.
