Potentia Term 1
Poetry: In this unit students explore poetic texts which contain universal themes of love, death, morality and the relationship between the individual and society. Students learn how to identify different types of poetry and how meaning is constructed through certain poetic techniques and devices.

Potentia Term 2
Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour: Students develop their skills in critical thinking and investigate how media such as advertisements convey a particular perspective, value or ideology. They are introduced to persuasive and rhetorical devices and consider how they impact an audience.

Potentia Term 3
Growing Up: Students explore youth issues through the close study of prose fiction texts. Skills in novel analysis are developed through a focus on character, theme and language, particularly the core text ‘Bridge to Terabithia.’ Students explore the genre of ‘bildungsroman,’ and ‘rites of passage’ and learn how to both analyse a novel as well as compose their own narratives. Images and Imagination: Students develop their ‘visual literacy’ skills through a close examination of how composers use images to convey meaning. They examine a variety of short films and picture books and learn how to write critically about the different elements of these texts. View the lesson plan
